Day 6 Stanthorpe to Killarney .. by C.Wilkins

After such a super and super cold day in Stanthorpe traversing it's blossom filled hinterland, we were some what reluctant to leave the place .. Though the -4 deg temps the next morning was a great alarm clock wake up call! We dusted the frost off our tent, packed it up and hit the road all rugged up in our winter warm gear to Killarney.

Todays voyage started with a dirty dusty stretch down through dirt roads and out of the range where Stanthorpe sits. Dan and Trudy rode exceptionally well in this rough graveled terrain considering their race bikes were sporting deep dish carbon wheels usually reserved for racing. This stretch of slippery gravel claimed 8 victims who slid their way across the road with injuries not so bad as to send them to hospital.

And now I retype a portion here of half an hour worth of a 'lost in cyberspace' blog, with fading batteries in a Boonah cafe ! Haha

After lunch, we wound our way through the picturesque country side of the Killarney surrounds, which is such a beautiful part of our land and our ancestors land .. Which I'll describe in more detail with fresh batteries in a later blog.

On the run into Killarney, Dan suffered a blow out to his tyre requiring a quick repair, and all up for that day we had a kilometers count of 105km's. Some of us then headed for the hills to rack up extra sponsorship k's in an amazingly beautiful ride that wound it's way up through the great divide, passing through Queen Mary's falls and onto Carrs lookout. This road included a 6 k pitch of 17%, and to give you an idea of that, the back of ghost hill in old Hervey town is at 14%!

By days end some of us had clocked 180 km each, the biggest day by far and with mountains included equates to just over 7 hrs in the saddle! The long days are beginning to hammer our immune systems, and destroy any sensation of normality in our legs, with Lars Les and myself fighting off a cold, though with every pedal stroke, we remind ourselves of the great reason for this ride.

It's still not to late to sponsor us for the Uganda Love Project and the wonderful kids we ride for .. Just goto www.everyday hero.com.au/cycling_forget_me_nots

Sunset is now weighing heavy on our eyelids along with a sunburnt smile, so we'll head off for some Tucker..

Stay tuned for some more great blogging from the team!
